When I recently did a YouTube search on just the single keyword “Bluesky” the results were completely filled with video after video of “Bluesky is dying” or “Bluesky death of being woke.” I understand that negative or even hate-filled clickbait will be gathering those sweet sweet clicks and watch-time but, is there a movement of Bluesky users going back to extwitter?
I left extwitter way back in 2022 among those who saw the writing on the wall with Elon taking control of the platform. It was always becoming a cesspool long before he came on board and with him at the helm, it quickly dove into reaches of even worse filth. Hate speech being pushed through as normative, along with more and more people being comfortable of using terms like r****d. They felt that by saying these words is free speech, which it is and I’ll defend your use of your right but, you don’t escape the consequences of using said hateful slurs.
I get it, there was a time back in the 80’s through some of the 2000’s where these terms were said a plenty but, many of us grew up and matured. We no longer needed to use these terms as wannabe edgy 14 year olds, thinking that we were so cool. Plus, we came to understand that the actions of saying these words belittled, oppressed, and/or caused segments of the wider human community harm when said.
When I saw that hateful videos towards a platform born out of the chaos for those of us who wanted to just sit back and share experiences be used as a prop in order for some poster child of hate and uncleanliness, to gain more clout. Well, I knew that for every video spewing this slop, there were more people out there enjoying the platform and trying to spread the word of inclusion.
Yes, I know in that Bluesky is a VC backed company that is being directed in some way shape or form to find measures and features to help keep it afloat. I know that extwitter is wholly owned by people that want nothing more than to push hate and vitriol across the platform. This gives them those higher number of clicks and anger filled posts that they crave. I liken it to Elon sulking in a large corner office somewhere in Texas, hunched over his phone as he scrolls feverishly, muttering “yes, more more.”
For me I continue to enjoy my time and experience on Bluesky, along with Mastodon, where I can understand my feeds knowing, the great majority of these accounts are actual people. People who don’t have to pay some arbitrary amount of money in order for there posts to be artificially pushed to the top. Verification is easily done through your own website domain name. Where I have more control of the information coming into my feed.
Bluesky may not be perfect and, no platform will be but, it is a place that a bit more relaxing to take part in.
