Synology found that the people have a lot of power in successfully boycotting their products after making the decision that going forward, all 3rd-party hard drives would not work within their newer model NAS's. I guess they figured they had enough enterprise customers that the decision wouldn't make much of a difference, they were wrong. They recently made the decision in reversing their earlier choice and now 3rd-party hard drives are fine to use within their NAS's. Would this help them regain customer retention, it depends as Synology did trash the goodwill they had built over a decade. www.guru3d.comSynology Reverses Policy Banning Third-Party HDDs After N...Synolog…

I've been doing some deep thinking lately about the direction of our community, and I wanted to share some exciting possibilities with you all. The Reality Check Let's be honest: we've carved out a pretty specific niche here. While our focus on alternative platforms has created a tight-knit community, I'm starting to wonder if we're limiting ourselves to an extremely small slice of the much larger maker and creator ecosystem. The Vision What if we could keep what makes us special while opening our doors to a broader range of creative minds? I'm talking about expanding into territories like: • Homelab enthusiasts sharing their latest server setups • Crafters showcasing int…

Since the announcement of Serif will be archiving the support forums in order to direct people to their new Discord server, there is now a post of an upcoming announcement. You'll might also have noticed you're no longer able to purchase a copy of any of the Affinity products. That's Photo, Design, and Publisher. This isn't something that is giving off some great vibes, since Canva acquired them, it's been rumored in that a potential V3 would be released soon and bring in a subscription plan. The writing is becoming clearer on that wall that Affinity will be losing a lot of reputation points from the wider community and perhaps cause many to grudgingly return to Adobe.

Scrolling through Reddit and this post caught my eye, could the community plugins be used as a vector in which someone could bring in malicious code in order to breach an account. I'm going to quote the following post as it does provide some great information on the matter. The main point that stuck out for me was, community plugins are a major part of Obsidian. My uneducated assumption was that I believed they were vetted in some way to be provided within the store, unfortunately that isn't the case it seems.

EposVox is a good resource in spearheading the indie web along with efforts to bring in more awareness to this initiative. There may be a few things I wouldn't agree with him on but, that's all part of being human and just trying to get through this thing called life. He brings up some great points on how many are hyper-focused on equating the Web3 movement and decentralization as being bad or even part of the crypto scene, which it a whole other section to be sure. Decentralization is something we should be working towards again, like how it was back in the day. Small sites taking part of being points of the internet and sharing information easily and freely, without be…

There is a rise of people who are expressing their displeasure of the community guidelines for Bluesky. I very quickly skimmed over it before starting this thread and it appears to be similar to other social network's guidelines, which runs counter to what the general community take is. Truthfully I haven't done much research on these changes but, I was looking to get your takes on this. Will the changes lead you to lower your Bluesky usage?

France is threatening to take Kick to court over creator safety, but the platform says it's just "politicization." Do you think streaming platforms should face the same regulations as TV networks, or would that kill creativity and free expression? What's the right balance between safety and censorship?

One of the streamers involved in the Jean Pormanove case claims "everything was consensual" and the deceased could "leave anytime he wanted." But when someone is financially dependent on harmful content and potentially struggling with mental health issues, can we really call it true consent? Where do you draw the line between personal choice and exploitation?

Twitch continues to try in bring in modern features into their ads format but, the latest is a possible experiment of skippable ads. Ads on Twitch are very viewer hostile as the content being viewed is still continuing during the ad break. This causes viewers who aren't subscribed to the particular channel or have Twitch Turbo, are forced to miss out on what is being streamed. This is far different from the ads system of other platforms or even YouTube, who have put in the work in the technology. With this experiment is something that'll not see the light of day for years to come since Twitch is very slow these years with their technology innovation.

It's another year and Twitch continues to do the special sub centric event every September, this time there's a bit more complications for it. What started out many years ago that would provide live streamers on Twitch a way to make a bit more money and to celebrate their community with extra iniatives has become more complex over the years. We can only surmise in that the monetization team are continuing their rituals of money magic, lately it seems that you need a spreadsheet or even a logic flow to make sense of it all. Long are the days of a simple yearly event, at least SUBtember is still being done.

Age restricting content or even platforms have been building momentum in several countries around the world. The UK is facing backlash over it's "protecting the children" movement of restricting access to many sites from within the country, to Australia banning anyone under the age of 16 to access social networks including YouTube. Now we can add Mississippi into the mix that is forcing social networks to either comply with their rules or be fined $10k per user for each infraction. This is just another state within the USA who are looking to lock down users access to these platforms under the guise of saving the children which, we all know is not the case for this at all…

It's been in beta testing for the past few months for those who have paid to be Catalyst members on Obsidian have been using the new database feature. This has been what many are calling it as a game changer for Obsidian, bringing Notion like features into the platform. I haven't messed around with it just yet as I've recently just updated my install of Obsidian but, I'm very curious in how it functions and whether it will become something that would be useful within my workflow. https://obsidian.md/changelog/2025-08-18-desktop-v1.9.10/
